The short version
Every real fabrication process answers the same three questions: what material, what energy, what joining principle. This challenge asks you to invent a hypothetical process of your own, draw it, and publish its conservation ledger — where every gram and joule comes from and where it goes. The invention can be wild; the bookkeeping cannot. Start from how the field itself defines a process — material, energy delivery, joining principle — in the standard additive-manufacturing vocabulary 1.
After reading, you can
- Describe any fabrication process by its material, energy, control, and waste streams
- Apply conservation-law reasoning to detect impossible process claims
- Present speculative work labeled honestly as concept art
- Share an entry through the community channels with rights stated clearly
01
Why invent a process that does not exist
Design even an imaginary machine honestly and you must answer the questions every real process answers: where material enters, what energy transforms it, what controls the transformation, and what leaves as waste. The additive-manufacturing vocabulary standard is, seen from one angle, a catalog of such answers — seven process families distinguished by material, energy delivery, and joining principle 1. This challenge asks for family number eight, invented by you, drawn clearly, and audited against the physics it cannot escape.
There is also an inoculation motive. Fabrication history is crowded with announced machines whose books never balanced: energy from nowhere, waste to nowhere, arbitrary precision at arbitrary speed. Real process development is a long conversation between claim and measurement — a national research program exists precisely to measure how additive processes actually behave 2. Running a conservation ledger on your own invention builds the reflex that reads other people's announcements. Physics audits every invoice; this challenge is practice at the desk.
02
The brief
Invent one fabrication process concept — any material, any scale, any century — and submit two artifacts. First, a single labeled diagram: material path in, energy path in, the control loop, and the waste stream out, all visible on one page. Second, a five-line conservation ledger in plain text: where mass comes from and goes; where energy comes from and how it dissipates; what is sensed and adjusted, and when; what waste exists and who handles it; and what fails or drifts first.
Constraints, and the point of them: your process may be futuristic, but it may not emit more than it ingests, promise zero waste, or hold arbitrary precision at arbitrary speed. If the ledger shows more coming out than going in, revise the invention, not the arithmetic. Name the closest real process family from the standard vocabulary and state what your concept changes about it 1. Label the entire entry as concept art. Wild is welcome; unaccountable is not.
- One drawing: material path, energy path, control loop, waste stream
- Ledger line one: where mass enters and exits
- Ledger line two: where energy enters and dissipates
- Ledger lines three and four: what is controlled, what is wasted
- Ledger line five: the first thing that breaks or drifts

Safety and rights boundaries
Boundaries, first for safety. This is a paper-and-pixels exercise: nothing needs to be built, and entries must not include working instructions for hazardous hardware — lasers, high voltage, compressed gases, pressure vessels, combustion, or reactive chemistry. Describe such elements at concept level only. Label every image and diagram as speculative concept art so no viewer, however casual, mistakes it for an operating machine or an offer to sell one. Honest labeling is part of the craft being practiced.
Then rights. Original work only: no trademarked characters, logos, or scanned commercial parts anywhere in the entry, and no borrowed diagrams. If you want others to build on your concept, consider releasing it under an open license such as Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, which permits reuse and adaptation while requiring credit 3; if you prefer to reserve rights, say so in the post. Either way, state the terms — a process concept about accounting should account for its own ownership.

How to participate
Participation is deliberately simple and entirely off-site. Post your diagram and ledger publicly on Instagram or X, tag @print.mason or @printmasons, and use the hashtag #PrintMasonChallenge so other entrants can find and discuss your process. If you prefer email, send the entry to right.just.right@gmail.com. PrintMason has no on-site accounts, uploads, or comments — the site publishes articles, and the conversation lives on the platforms and in the inbox.
The challenge is ongoing: no deadline, no judging date, no prizes, and no promised features. Entries are read, and strong ledgers tend to draw the best replies from other makers, which is the actual reward on offer. Put the five ledger lines in the post text or the image alt text so the accounting travels with the picture rather than living only inside it. Repeat entries are welcome — second drafts of an invented process are where the learning concentrates.

What a strong entry shows
A strong entry balances its books in public. The ledger uses honest orders of magnitude or explicitly marked unknowns — an unknown declared is credible; an unknown hidden is hype. The first failure mode is named specifically: nozzle wear, dose drift, thermal runaway, contamination, operator fatigue. The comparison to a real family is precise about what changed 1. And every speculative leap is labeled as one, which makes the leaps easier to enjoy.
Weak entries share a signature: adjectives where numbers should be, energy that appears without a source, waste that vanishes, and control handed to an unspecified intelligence. The measurement mindset is the antidote, and it is the same mindset public research programs apply to real processes 2. If your invented process existed tomorrow, what would you measure first, and with what instrument? Add that line to the entry. It is the most revealing sentence an inventor can write.

- Concept art
- Speculative illustration of an idea, labeled so it cannot be mistaken for a working device.
- Feedstock
- The input material a fabrication process consumes.
